Counterpoint Israel- Arad

Over the course of Counterpoint Israel, eleven carefully selected Yeshiva University students run a summer camp for fifty five Israeli teens from low socio-economic backgrounds.  The day camps have three primary goals: a. Improvement of English writing and oratory skills. b. Discovering and cultivating individual talents – every day, six workshops are offered to the teens. Professional instructors run the workshops. The workshops are designed to produce immediate results, so that the teens constantly feel a sense of self-gratification, boosting their self-esteem and artistic expression – generally an undiscovered area in their lives. The workshops culminate in a high profile closing event attended by many, where the teens perform and/or exhibit their work. Trophies and prizes are presented to teens that have made significant progress. c. Summer Fun – incorporated into the summer camp are fun activities, each with an educational subtext, such as outdoor team building activities; a two-day heritage tour in Jerusalem; extreme sports and cultural events. While the YU students are involved in running the camps, they are also engaged in supplementary studies, workshops and classes that relate directly to the work that they are doing. These learning opportunities take a full day form in seminars that are run in the weeks prior to the camp, and in the week following. Curriculum includes social activism; Zionism studies; urban studies about the local region; leadership training,  pedagogic and textual studies.
