Sephardi Voices Across the Oceans

Over 2,500 years ago, Jews lived in North Africa, the Middle East, and Iran in significant quantities, reflecting a Jewish presence that preceded Christianity in 500 years and Islam in 1,300 years. In 1948, almost one million Jews lived in Arab lands throughout North Africa and the Middle East in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War, less than 20,000 remained. Today all their communities have been wiped out. Ninety percent of these displaced Jews now live in Canada, the United States, France, and Israel. Researchers estimate we have a window of opportunity of 5 10 years before first generation witnesses will no longer be alive to tell us their stories. We have a task to take advantage of this historic opportunity and responsibility before it is too late. "Voices of the East" is an attempt to enlist young people in Montreal, Beer Sheva and Jerusalem in the first major international agreement of its kind, in the transmission of the stories of Sephardi Jews and their communities. By deploying in several continents and involving thousands of people, we have set a goal to glean the rich history of these communities, documenting their migration and beyond. Once compiled these life stories, documented through audio testimonies and high quality visual testimonies, will be the engine that will drive integrative projects and projects. We believe that by harnessing young people to this project, we are adding value not only to the project, but also to the lives of those young people, overseas and in Israel, who know little about the richness of Jewish life in Arab and Muslim lands and how to inform Jewish life today in Israel and Montreal .
