Lunch and Learn

The Lunch and Learn Project 450 elementary school children from 12 schools from all of the different sectors of the community, secular, religious, orthodox and the Black Hebrews, participate in the project. About 80% of the Lunch and Learn children are considered to be at risk, and have to deal with various difficulties, such as low socio-economic circumstances, single-parent families, new immigrants, parental dysfunction and study and social difficulties, while about 20% of the children in the project come from normative families, or are considered at low-level risk, in order to create heterogeneous groups of children from all strata of the population. The reason for this is in order to create role models for the at-risk children, and to avoid stigmatizing the project's children. The Lunch and Learn Centers provide a warm, supportive educational framework which supplements school activity. The children spend time at the Centers with their friends, and pass the afternoon hours enjoyably. Activity The Lunch and Learn Centers operate according to a schedule which includes preparation of homework and participation in supplemental activity groups, arts and crafts, sports, yard games, and a healthy hot lunch – all of which is supervised by a professional staff of instructors. The staff focuses on personal attention to the children, on social-ethical education and enrichment on a wide range of subjects. The activity at the Centers is both educational (preparation of homework) and social, combining enrichment activities and focus on values such as tolerance and respect for others, together with development of social skills.
