Das Zusammenleben von Menschen erheischt allerdings eine gewisse gegenseitige Rücksichtnahme, Opfer muss jeder bringen, der die Wohltaten der Gemeinschaft mitgeniessen will. Diese Opfer werden aber umso geringer, je breitwilliger man sie darbringt.

Was ist das für eine wunderbare Maschine, der Menschenleib. Ein chemisches Laboratorium, ein Kraftwerk. Jede Bewegung, willkürliche wie unwillkürliche, voll von Rätseln und Wundern. Was werden da für Gase und Flüssigkeiten erzeugt, schädliche und nützliche. Ich glaube darum an die Serumtheorie. So wie Gifte, erzeugt der tierische Körper offenbar auch Heilstoffe, die man in schreitenden Zeiten sicherlich auffinden wird.

What a wonderful machine the human body is! A chemical laboratory, a powerhouse. Every movement, voluntary as well as involuntary, full of riddles and wonders. What gases and liquids are produced here, harmful and useful ones! This is why I believe in the serum theory. Just as it produces toxins, the animal body evidently also produces antidotes which will surely be discovered as time progresses.

Die Funktion der Engländer ist grandios. Sie säubern den Orient, bringen Licht und Luft in die Schmutzwinkel, brechen alte Tyrannien und zerstören Missbräuche. Aber mit der Freiheit und dem Fortschritt lehren sie die Fellachen auch die Auflehnung. Ich glaube, die englische Schule in den Kolonien zerstört entweder Englands Kolonialherrschaft - - oder sie begründet Englands Weltherrschaft. Eine der interessantesten Alternativen unserer Zeit. Ich möchte in 50 Jahren wiederkommen, um den Ausgang zu sehen.

What the English are doing is splendid. They are cleaning up the Orient, letting light and air into the filthy corners, breaking old tyrannies, and destroying abuses. But along with freedom and progress they are also teaching the fellahin how to revolt. I believe, the English example in the colonies will either destroy England's colonial empire - - or lay the foundation for England's world dominion. I would like to come back in 50 years to see how it has turned out.
