Today Chairman of the Jewish Agency, Yitzchak (Buzi) Herzog met with the contestants of the World Bible Quiz for Jewish Youth who will participate in the Quiz to be held on Yom Ha’atzma’ut 2019.

While speaking to the youngsters, in the Dr. Haim Weizmann Hall at the National Buildings in Jerusalem, he showed them the Bible that was presented to his mother, Ora Herzog, as a gift from David Ben Gurion, after she initiated the idea of the Bible Quiz.

“My mother, Ora Herzog, served as the Director General of the Committee for organizing events on Israel’s tenth anniversary, which was held in 1958, and initiated the idea of the Bible Quiz. Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion, presented her with the Bible, together with a letter and dedication,” said Herzog.

Herzog told the youngsters that his grandfather, Rabbi Isaac Halevy Herzog, founder of the Chief Rabbinate, would have been delighted to meet the youngsters, because he loved the Bible and loved to quiz youngsters to test their love and diligence in Bible studies.

The Bible Quiz coordinator told us:

“This year 72 participants from 41 countries participated in the World Bible Quiz. This is the first time that we had representatives from Albania and Paraguay. The contestants speak 18 different languages and the questions were translated into all these languages. This is a combined effort, undertaken by coordinators around the world, who are local volunteers representing the program in their countries.”

“This year we have greatest range of ages, 14 to 18, and the largest number of countries, languages and religious backgrounds. They participate in a Bible Camp which is similar to Birthright – an intensive experience which results in long term friendships.”

“Many of the Bible Camp graduates continue to participate in key roles in their local communities.”

“The Bible Quiz is the first opportunity for many contestants to visit Israel and learn about the Jewish state.”
