The Neta@ program began operating in Kfar Saba in 2006. It is a program designed to encourage technological excellence and social leadership among youths in Grades 9 to 12. During the course, the participants acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of computers, computer networks and building web sites. The program provides the youths with personal and professional skills and opens a window of opportunity for them in both employment and higher education. It also contributes to their social and economic mobility by, among other things, improving their English, developing the ability for self-learning, strengthening their self-confidence and creating a history of accomplishment. The program prepares the participants for service in leading technological units in the IDF and for employment in hi-tech companies. Currently, there are about one hundred youths in four classes (Grade 9, 10, 11 and 12) in the program. The program accepts youths from middle to weak socioeconomic backgrounds, with preference given to new immigrants. The program is administered and operated by the Appleseeds Academy in conjunction with Cisco, the Jewish Agency and Keren Hayesod. The Neta@ participants operate the Fixit Center, which is a lab for the recycling and repair of computers. Computers that cannot be repaired are used for parts. The computer lab charges local residents a nominal fee for repair work. The Neta@ participants work in the lab as volunteers and the lab also serves as an employment incubator for them.
