What's Cooking in Partnership

"As we learn about each other we learn about ourselves". Fifth graders in both of our school systems learn about the origin of their families, connecting themselves to their roots. The program includes asking family members personal stories passed from generation to generation. Each student in the program is given a list of questions to ask members of his/her family. The student summarizes the responses in one page, which also includes a family recipe. Two skype conferences are held during the school year to introduce the students to each other and to learn about their family's background. The students discuss the subject of family roots in their community and their ideas for the cookbook. The partnered schools send the final papers to each other and a cookbook is presented to each student at the end of the program. The cookbook is comprised of one recipe from Broward and on the opposite page one recipe from Nesher. Through common dialogue, the staffs of the involved schools have named the cookbook "What's Cooking in with My Partner" This initiative connects our students to their roots, their common Jewish identity and connects them through a creative and interesting project.
