Reach for the Stars

A unique Netanya Cincinnati initiative, which brings together children from middle schools to learn and explore the heritage of Israel's first astronaut Ilan Ramon, through the story of Prof. Joachim (Yoya) Josef, a holocaust survivor who celebrated his Bar Mitzvah secretly in Bergen Belsen concentration camp. The holocaust center in Cincinnati teaches the program to Bar/Bat Mitzvah youth in Cincinnati and together with a class of 7th grade students from "Sharet" school in Netanya, a joint video conference is held every year, in which Prof. Henry Fenichel, a physics professor at Cincinnati University and a holocaust survivor, tells his own personal story of the holocaust. Goals of the program: To enrich Bar/Bat Mitzvah youth's knowledge about the Holocaust To expose the students to their partner community and to their peers To strengthen the Jewish identity of B'nai Mitzvah from both communities
