    Kibbutz Under Fire

    On the eve of the 9th of Av, 24 hours after IDF forces began withdrawing from the Gaza Strip, one can still hear the echoes of shooting in the backyard of Kibbutz Alumim, here on the Gaza border. The kibbutz was established by The Jewish Agency and the Bnei Akiva movement on the border of the Gaza Strip, and has endured constant rocket-fire for many years. Kibbutz members continue to try to live normal lives, despite the rocket-fire, continuing their agricultural work.

    Esther Marcus, a veteran Olah from England, who lives across the open tunnels dug by “Hamas” in Kibbutz Alumim, two kilometers from Gaza, wrote “The Color Red”, an inspiring children’s storybook that became a bestseller in Israel. There has also been a play put on by the same name. We heard from her about the storybook, about life in front of the tunnels, and the respite activities in the center of Israel.

    Mt. Herzl has seen its share of heartbreaking sights since it was founded, after the War of Independence. The funerals for the soldiers who were killed in Operation Protective Edge were held this week in the cemetery’s military section. This afternoon, more than thirty thousand people participated in the funeral of the lone soldier, Birthright graduate, fighter of the Golani Brigade’s 13th battalion, American citizen Max Steinberg, of blessed memory. There was not a dry eye on the Mount.

    Ronit Greengold of Merkaz Kafri Mevo’im in the South is a volunteer who runs Jewish Agency projects for the MetroWest New Jersey community. Her home has been under attack by Hamas missiles for many, long days. Ronit talks about the generous reception that was given to families from the Merkhavim Regional Council by residents of the Tzahar Partnership (Tzfat, Hatzor Haglilit and Rosh Pina). It is heart-warming to hear about people helping each other and “partnering” under fire.
