This is a programme which can be done in one of two ways, both of which involve the study of history in a very creative manner. The first is suitable for a weekly meeting, but the second requires a half day at least and quantities of art materials. One way of organizing this activity is for people to view slides, films, or other photographic material, in order to gain a visual image of the Ghetto and then to make a "museum" through arts and crafts. Participants can make any item they like (maybe after the time capsule programme) but they also need to write a brief description. The group should also decide whether the museum will be divided by themes, or by time periods, as this will also influence what they do. Encourage participants to be as creative as possible and include group counsellors with good artistic talents to help. Once the museum is complete and people have seen each others' work, you can sum up by discussing how easy or difficult they found the task and what they learnt from it. Extension OptionFind some images of the Warsaw Ghetto from your local Resource Centre, or scan some from books. Show them to your group whilst explaining the necessary historical background. Divide participants into sub-groups; each takes one image showing people and ask them to imagine what one of them was doing half an hour after thescene was photographed, and express their ideas in the form of human sculptures (still-life drama/freeze drama). When participants are ready they should present their museum exhibition to the group and describe how and why they did what they did. This activity will involve people very creatively in understanding different parts of the period. Note: You may need to provide some background information.
