1. 'On the eighth day you shall hold an atzeret (Assembly).
2. Shemini Atzeret as a Festival in its own right - sheheheyanu.
3. Tefillat HaGeshem (General Prayer for Rain) on Shemini Atzeret . (Immediate prayer for rain on the 7th of Heshvan, in Israel - on the 5th or 6th of December in the Diaspora).
4. Simchat Torah , when the reading of the Torah is completed - and restarted. The last weekly portion ( Vezot Habrachah ) and the first ( Bereishit ).
5. Hatan Torah and Hatan Bereishit .
6. Hakafot (circuits). Seven circuits with the Torah.
7. Shemini Atzeret falls on the eighth day from the beginning of Succot (22nd of Tishrei).
Simchat Torah is on the ninth day (23rd of Tishrei), except in Israel where it is celebrated on Shemini Atzeret (i.e. both festivals together, on the same day).
