Learning and Enrichment Project

Each year, dozens of Yokneam students study at the religious youth village.  In recent years, the vast majority of them have been from the Ethiopian community.  They come from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds and need help and reinforcement in various school subjects.  Some are new immigrants who have difficulties understanding Hebrew while some are falling behind at elementary school in different subjects, mainly math and English. The economic situation of their parents prohibits them from sending their children for extra lessons.  Furthermore, the children are deprived of enrichment activities such as art, music, sports and others.  Sometimes, even supplying them with a hot meal is a problem. In addition, loitering in the streets of Yokneam and the risky behaviors students occasionally encounter makes it difficult for them to internalize positive values.  They require assistance from a process that supports socialization, a positive peer group and life skills. This program allows the students to be busy and active at school for longer hours (most of the daylight hours) therefore keeps them off the street and out of trouble. In light of this reality, a program is needed to supply a response to these deficiencies: in primary needs such as food and a protected environment, in narrowing learning gaps, and in personal empowerment and enrichment.  The program would also promote life skills and social skills as well as connections with heritage, the Jewish People and Israel.  Through pooling resources of the Jewish Agency, the Yokneam Community Center, Hadasim youth village and a Ministry of Education after school budget, we can supply a response to more children in more areas and for more hours than in recent years.
