Ich begreife den Antisemitismus. Wir Juden haben uns, wenn auch nicht durch unsere Schuld, als Fremdkörper inmitten verschiedener Nationen erhalten. Wir haben im Ghetto eine Anzahl gesellschaftswidriger Eigenschaften angenommen. Unser Charakter ist durch den Druck verdorben und muss durch einen anderen Druck wieder hergestellt werden. Tatsächlich ist der Antisemitismus die Folge der Judenemanzipation. Bevölkerungen, denen das historische Verständnis mangelt - also alle -, sehen uns aber nicht als geschichtliches Produkt an, nicht als die Opfer früherer, grausamer und noch beschränkterer Zeiten.

I understand what antisemitism is about. We Jews have maintained ourselves, even if through no fault of our own, as a foreign body among the different nations. In the Ghetto we have taken on a number if anti-social characteristics. Our character has been damaged through oppression and must be repaired through some other sort of pressure. As a matter of fact, antisemitism is a consequence of the emancipation of the Jews. The peoples who lack historical understanding - in a word, all of them - do not see us as an historical product, as the victims of earlier, crueler, and still more narrow-minded times.

Viele Juden jubeln jetzt töricht über die Nichtbestätigung Luegers as Bürgermeister. Als ob er Antisemitismus mit Lueger gleichbedeutend wäre. Ich glaube vielmehr, dass die Bewegung gegen die Juden jetzt eilig zunehmen wird.

Many Jews are foolishly jubilant over the non-confirmation of Lueger's election to the mayoralty. As though Lueger were tantamount to antisemitism. I believe, on the contrary, that the movement against the Jews will grow rapidly now.
