Inside the Jewish Agency

This Month in Zionism - March

People and events in the history of Zionism: March

1906: Bezalel Academy of Art and Design founded:

The academy was established, officially, in March 1906, three years after founder Boris Schatz, a professor of art in Sofia, Bulgaria, convinced Theodor Herzl to build an art high school in Jerusalem.

The school set as its initial goals:

"Training of the youth Jerusalem in handcrafts, the formulation of original Jewish Art, support for Jewish artists, and finding a visual expression of the desire of spiritual and national independence, to create a synthesis between the European artistic traditions and traditional design of the Jewish East and West, and integrate with the local culture of the Land of Israel. "

Since then, Bezalel has trained thousands of artists, among them, some of the greatest painters of the "Betzalel" and "Land of Israel" school, many of whom who have garnered international acclaim. A 1911 fundraising  .video showing the establishment of Betzalel is here

1930: "The Thousand Program":

Large-scale attempts to populate rural area in the Land of Israel began to take shape in the modern era in 1923 when the Jewish National Fund purchased 40,000 dunams (approx. 10,000 acres) of barren land in the Jezreel Valley.

In March, 1930, The Jewish Agency for Israel debated the merits of the so-called Thousand project, in which 1,000 families would be brought to settle the area, and be paid 350 Israeli Lira to aid their efforts to work the land. An aerial video of the region is viewable here, and a 1947 film, "This is Our Valley," about the redemption of the land and settlement-building, is here.

In February, 1956, American newsman Ed Morrow held a wide-ranging audio interview with Israel's first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion, at his home on Kibbutz Sde Boker in the Negev Desert, and about the difficulties of settling the land: Video.

March 9, 1948: Formation of first Israeli Cabinet:

On March 9, 1948, Israel's first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion, announces the formation of the first Cabinet, at a meeting held at the San Remo Hotel in Tel Aviv.

In the same month, the so-called "Rhodes Talks" began between Israel and the Government of Jordan (then Transjordan), on the terms of the armistice agreement between the two countries.

March, 2012: IDF Operation 'Returning Echo':

On March 9, 2012 the Israeli army embarked on Operation "Hed Hozer - Returning Echo" to destroy rocket launching facilities and ammo dumps used to attack Israel. In a targeted air strike, the Air Force killed Popular Resistance Committees chief Zohair al-Qaisi, who Israel said masterminded a cross-border attack in the previous year that killed eight Israelis, two of them civilians.

In retaliation, Palestinians fired over 300 long-range Grad, and shorter-range Kassam rockets, and mortars, at cities and towns throughout Israel's southlands, wounding over 20 civilians.

Video of an Israeli family during a rocket strike is here. Video of the Iron Dome anti-missile interceptor system, which succeeded in thwarting close to 90 percent of Palestinians rockets fired at populated civilian areas is here.

The Jewish Agency for Israel was and remains active in aiding injured civilians via the Fund for Victims of Terror and via other means.
